The Prince Estate is digging deeper into the hallowed Vault. A new posthumous Prince collection, Timeless, will arrive Aug. 28 via Legacy Recordings, bringing together 10 rare and previously unreleased recordings spanning nearly the entirety of the artist’s recording career. According to the Estate, the project is the first Prince release curated to draw from every major era of his creative life, featuring material recorded between 1977 and his death in 2016.
The announcement arrives alongside the release of “Stone,” a previously unreleased 1995 recording written by Sandra St. Victor, Tom Hammer and Jules Van Even. The track serves as the second preview of Timeless following April’s release of “With This Tear,” a stripped-down 1991 recording unveiled to mark the 10th anniversary of Prince’s passing.
The album’s scope is ambitious even by Vault standards, as it begins with “I Am You,” recorded in 1977 when Prince was still a teenage prodigy in Minneapolis, and concludes on a live 2016 performance of “How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore?” The Estate describes the collection as “a sweeping portrait” of Prince’s artistic journey, highlighting the consistency and curiosity that defined his work regardless of era.
Timeless will be available digitally, on CD and in multiple vinyl configurations, including a limited-edition Purple Marble pressing available directly through Prince’s official channels. Meanwhile, fans attending this week’s Prince Celebration in Minneapolis will get a first crack at the new music. The annual gathering, taking place through Sunday across Paisley Park studio and downtown Minneapolis, will offer listening sessions, archival presentations and discussions with Prince collaborators centered around the newly unveiled recordings.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has also officially proclaimed this week as Prince Celebration Week; on Saturday, the city’s skyline will be illuminated in purple in tribute to its most iconic musical ambassador. Among the Celebration highlights is a Friday event at Minneapolis’ Armory featuring members of the New Power Generation, along with former Revolution members Bobby Z and Lisa Coleman, who will offer firsthand perspectives on Prince’s creative legacy and the newly unearthed material.
