Check out this contest, open to all students around the world in grade 6 and up: https://awm-math.org/awards/student-essay-contest/ This is a rare opportunity to participate in a contest that involves mathematical journalism and nonfiction writing. You also get to know interesting people. The contest has been running since 2001, so students can also enjoy (and learn from!) many past essays.
