There are so many people who help parents navigate their feeding journeys.

It can be really hard to figure out who you should go to for different issues. This list doesn't go over every single lactation supporter. There are wonderful volunteer organizations, and different programs offering various training opportunities. These are just some of the most common you'll see. Understanding who is qualified to handle what is really important because unfortunately not all professionals will be honest about that.

ANYONE can call themselves a lactation consultant. Only an IBCLC is a board certified, recognized medical professional. You can always check the IBLCE registry if you're not sure if someone is a "lactation consultant" or a real IBCLC.

Another thing to know is that our board exam is considered entry level to the field. Our knowledge is NOT supposed to stop when the exam ends. That's there the top of the pyramid comes in. While some IBCLCs are content to help with latching and milk supply, our Clinical Competency Requirements actually go far beyond that. Some IBCLCs invest in clinical skills to fully embrace our Scope of Practice and give parents the resources they deserve. The results they experience amaze us every day and we're so grateful for the brilliant and knowledgeable people we've learned from.

All levels of lactation support are valuable and help parents around the world meet their goals. If you're experiencing anything that is more clinically complex, you'll need to travel up the pyramid and find an IBCLC. If you need help finding someone highly skilled in your area, please reach out!

I am SO excited to announce this news. Please give the warmest welcome to my new mentee Arielle!!

Arielle will be joining me along during consults to learn and grow, and expand the amazing care offered at Every Drop Lactation Services.

Hi I’m Arielle, a Seattle native but currently residing in the Raleigh area. I hold a Bachelor Degree in Biology pre-med and I am currently a certified breast feeding specialist.

I took an interest in lactation consulting around age 7, after witnessing my neighbor breastfeeding her newborn. Instantly intrigued and in awe, my 7 year old mind thought how amazing the human body is, we make food!
That single encounter, brought me here. My interest never wavered it only grew. I’m so excited to learn from Brenna at Every Drop Lactation to help me get closer to my goals of becoming a lactation consultant. I look forward to working with you on your lactation journey!

To have the supplies we need for our next event on December 2, we need to raise $300. To apply for a grant on January 13, we need ten new donations in any amount. After talking with the LGBTQ+ Human Milk Feeding Committee, we were asked to share the following email. This is the last donation post that will do in November. We understand everyone’s inbox gets overrun with Giving Tuesday requests, let alone the Holiday Hustle.
Thank you,
The Breastfeed Durham Team

Hello!

I am a volunteer with Breastfeed Durham, a monthly sustainer, and the head of the LGBTQ+ Human Milk Feeding Committee.

Over the past few years, we have made tremendous progress towards consolidating local and national resources for all the varied ways EVERY FAMILY can get human milk for their babies and support for their families.

This year we have worked with a local artist to create diverse and inclusive human milk feeding icons that demonstrate just how broad culturally, racially, and identity-wise the lactating & human milk world really is.

We have designed some of the first broadly-inclusive human milk merchandise that celebrates the full spectrum of human milk feeding.

Representation and visibility are MAJOR steps toward ensuring equal access to support.

But we need your help!

In order to give away these products at the many community events on our calendar, we need $500 in total donations for merchandise.

Donate

Impact of Giving:

$1 - adds to our total number of donations and helps with grant proposals
$10 - 2 baby-sized shirts
$25 - 3 adult t-shirts
$50 - 10 full-color tote bags
$100 - the full printing cost of 50 magnets

Please consider donating as little as one dollar to Breastfeed Durham today and help spread the word that Human Milk is the Best Milk!
