Mara Elephant Project
What does it mean to be a female ranger?
For Sylvia, it's an opportunity to lead by example.
Growing up in a community where elephants would raid crops, she understands the realities of living alongside wildlife. Today, she's part of the team working to protect elephants, conserve critical habitat, and support coexistence across the Mara.
But her impact extends beyond conservation.
For Sylvia, being a ranger isn't just about protecting wildlife. It's also about showing her siblings and other women in her community that conservation is a path open to them, and that women have an important place in safeguarding the landscapes and wildlife they call home.
This World Female Ranger Week, we're celebrating women like Sylvia who are helping shape the future of conservation through their dedication, leadership, and example.
Mara Elephant Project hopes to send Sylvia and another female ranger through drone pilot training, equipping them with new skills to monitor wildlife, support patrol operations, and strengthen conservation efforts from above.
It costs $1,700 to train one ranger as a drone pilot.
Will you invest today to help equip dedicated elephant guardians like Sylvia with the tools they need to protect wildlife and support coexistence?

“Elephants are my family.”
So says Mara Elephant Project Ranger Caren Cheptoo Yegon, whose passion for protecting elephants drives her work every day on the frontlines of conservation.
As we are set to launch tomorrow, we have a very special MEP for you today.
This month, we're highlighting Caren and the critical role she plays within the Protect pillar of the MEP Method. From flying drones over dense bush to leading her team on foot through challenging terrain, Caren supports and conducts a wide range of patrols across the Mara ecosystem.
Her work is guided by one goal and one passion: protecting elephants and their habitats to ensure the population can thrive for generations to come.
For Caren, conservation is deeply personal. If elephants are family, then protecting them means standing watch over the individuals, herds, and habitats that make the Mara ecosystem so extraordinary.
