We are so excited to introduce Maddie DuBoyce, our new seasonal coordinator for Boulder/Broomfield counties. Maddie is originally from Maryland and until recently, she’s spent most of her life on the East Coast. Maddie studied Environmental Science and Spanish at Dickinson College, and became interested in food and farming after taking an Agroecology class.

Maddie comes to UpRoot with lots of farm experience having apprenticed on their college’s farm in Pennsylvania for two years and more recently working on a local non-profit farm in Longmont for several seasons. Additionally, Maddie has a passion for food justice and has spent the past couple of years working in food access through the Boulder Farmer’s Market. While they wouldn’t dare eat a crab cake 🦀 anywhere else besides Maryland, Maddie was drawn to Boulder to learn more about small-scale urban farming (...and for the ice cream 🍦) Be sure to say hi to Maddie when you see her on a glean in Boulder County!

In May and June, Uproot volunteers helped transplant a cornucopia of vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, onions, shallots and dill at Mary’s Hands in East Boulder! Mary’s Hands is a nonprofit focused on growing fresh produce for people facing food insecurity. We are so excited to see the fruits of our labor later this season as these plants produce delicious vegetables to harvest—all for the local community!

UpRoot is delighted to introduce you to Augusto Latorre, our new Mesa County Gleaning and Food Systems Coordinator based in Grand Junction! We are so excited for all that Augusto brings to the team and for the breadth of community experiences in the Grand Valley already under his belt, including working with the Housing Division via an Americorps position and supporting agricultural migrant and immigrant communities through La Plaza. A background in biological science and lab work makes Augusto a well-rounded fit for a role that requires attention to detail and observation of all things great and small—when you meet him, ask him about the Western Harvester ant research that brought him to Colorado!

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Augusto enjoys spending time with his family, rooting for Venezuela’s national sports teams, listening to science podcasts, running outdoors with friends, and otherwise exploring nature
