National Onion Ring Day is observed on June 22 each year to celebrate the beloved snack of batter-dipped, deep-fried onion slices, which have become a staple in diners, fast-food restaurants, and home kitchens across the U.S. and beyond. The first known onion ring recipe appeared in John Mollard’s 1802 cookbook, The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined, which suggested slicing onions, dipping them in a batter with flour, cream, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese, and deep-frying them. In the early 20th century, a Texas-based restaurant chain, Kirby’s Pig Stand, claimed to popularize onion rings in the U.S., and later A&W later helped bring them into the mainstream fast-food culture.
