September's Plant of the Month: Sunflower 🌻
Description: Sunflower is part of the daisy family. They are native to North & Central America. Bloom time: Summer until Frost. They are annuals except the Maximillan Sunflowers which are perennials. They come in a variety of colors ranging from white, yellow, yellow/orange, bronze and burgundy. Many grow one foot to six feet tall.
Purpose:
Sunflowers are great for pollinators and attract butterflies and bees.
Sunflowers are raised to harvest the seeds and oil.
Growing Conditions:
Sunflowers can be planted in Full Sun/well drainage soil by planting seeds or seedlings. It will take 8-10 days for germination and a total of 60 days prior to bloom time. It is recommended to do successor planting to be able to enjoy these cheerful flowers for several months.
Common Diseases/Pests:
Common pests are Aphids and Lygus bugs. Sunflowers release allelopathic chemicals and they grow and shouldn’t be planted near beans or potatoes.
