Small Town Snippets....The Quint Valley Youth Development Club began in 1951. 4H was very active in our towns, and every year the fair was held in a different town. Having a permanent, centrally located place was a good idea, and thanks to caring folks in Watkins, Bennett, Strasburg, Byers and Deer Trail (5 towns……QUINT Valley), a good idea became reality. Local farmers donated some of their wheat crop dollars, the Deer Trail Jockey Club had a fund raiser that brought in over $4,500 and contributions of all kinds rolled in to meet the $15,000 project. It took two days to pour the concrete floor, all done by volunteers. The Quonset was completed by August 1951, just in time for the first Quint Valley Fair. I’m not the only one that would like to know where the stage backdrop went…who remembers it? All hand painted advertisers on a dark blue background. As the years went by there were school carnivals, lots of dances, group meetings, weddings, receptions and many other gatherings held in the Quonset. Good things happen when friends and neighbors work together, and a hard days work with no pay is very satisfying when all are working to make something better.
