In the 70s and 80s, some homes used 3/8” CDX and then chose NOT to do ridge vent (especially, Ryans).
It was garbage then and it’s even worse now. In those cases, we completely replaced the plywood with 7/16” OSB and add a continuous ridge vent to be used in conjunction with existing soffit vents BEFORE installing a lifetime warranted architectural shingle.
A roof is NOT the place to cut corners.
