Jamaica Kincaid, born “Elaine Potter Richardson” in St. John’s, Antigua, on May 25, 1949, is an Antiguan American writer who has notable works of novels, essays, and gardening writings. When her writing was first published, she changed her name to Jamaica Kincaid because it suited her. She explains that “Jamaica” is an English mistranslation of what Columbus called Xaymaca, the part of the world that she comes from, and “Kincaid,” meaning “battle leader.”
Her works have received both critical acclaim and criticism. They are largely derived from her personal experiences, yet they are not strictly autobiographical.” The audience often perceives them as “angry.” However, she and her supporters argue that this critique is invalid, as many authors draw upon personal experience in their works. Many of her works explore themes of feminism, colonialism, and liberation.
Kincaid’s writings gained recognition in the ‘70s and ‘80s, as they were published in prominent literary outlets such as The New Yorker and The Paris Review. Notable works, including her books “Lucy,” “A Small Place,” and “At the Bottom of the River,” have become subjects of study in classrooms and universities worldwide. Kincaid has received various awards, including the American Book Award and the Lannan Literary Award for Fiction. Currently, she teaches African and African American Studies at Harvard University.
