Doane Academy
06/06/2026
Last night Doane Academy held its Class Night; a scene of traditions, awards, and a final night for the graduating class to laugh and reminisce about their lives together at Doane.
The evening’s events opened in the historic chapel, where a number of awards were conferred. These recognitions covered areas of academics, the arts, science, math, language, history, student government, leadership, perseverance, and also some college scholarships were awarded.
The next stop moved everyone out beyond the baseball field, where the Class of 2026 planted their class tree, alongside a host of trees of earlier classes.
All then moved on to the main soccer field, where the traditional passing of the Ivy Necklace, and the handing down of caps and gowns took place.
Ceren Firat, last year’s recipient of the Ivy Necklace, chose Ava McGeever as the next holder of this very old item, passed down through generations of girls at the school.
The cap and gown passing ceremony was born many decades ago and first saw graduating seniors symbolically hand down their caps and gowns, each to a junior classmate, in the hope that they would carry on that departing senior’s legacy. This ceremony has changed over time and now seniors symbolically give their caps and gowns to all of those friends, family, and Doane staff who have mentored, supported, and lifted them to this moment.
Finally, the Class of 2026 moved to the Circle to enjoy dinner with classmates and family and to watch the ‘Senior Slideshow,’ a brief photo and musical review of each senior’s life to this point. A lot of laughs and a few tears were shed before they left to prepare for the morning and Commencement.
