The Important Lesson of Cohort Zero

Last Thursday, I visited The Vineyards, an assisted living and independent living facility with over 300 residents, located on beautiful grounds in Fresno, California. For the past six months, the first cohort of ten Vineyards residents has been following the ReCODE+ protocol, and we just received the initial follow-up data, which are truly remarkable: significant improvements in insulin sensitivity, triglycerides, memory, and overall cognitive performance. As I sat with this “Cohort Zero”, all ten residents told their personal stories, which were moving and heartwarming: many no longer needed their medications (antihypertensives, anti-diabetic drugs, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and others), one man ended his diabetes after 30 years, a woman ended her arthritis, many shed extra pounds, and improved mental sharpness was enhanced in just about everyone. Hearing story after story, I was overwhelmed. Their testimonials and data represent an important advance in dementia prevention and treatment, proof that facilities like The Vineyards can play a major role in reducing the societal burden of dementia. Beyond this, the group shows that families should be able to enjoy visits with loved ones without the steep cognitive decline that is so common in such facilities.

I am grateful to the outstanding team that put this all together: Dennis Bacopulos, Lance Kelly, Julie Gregory, Chris Coward, Wendy Davis, Lynn Killips, Scott Carter, Jennifer Newton, Julie Luby, Madison Carbone, Val Driscoll, Sho Okada, and the Larry L. Hillblom Foundation, as well as Dr. Heather Sandison, who showed with Marama that our protocol could be implemented in an assisted living facility.

Multiple infections have been linked to cognitive decline, but a recent case study documented the first reversal of Alzheimer’s biomarkers following treatment for an infection. Watch as Dr. Dale Bredesen interviews Dr. Richard Horowitz, author of Ending Chronic Illness, about this exciting finding and its implications for your cognitive health. https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6SUdIis_S9GH_9D1dJDg6w #/registration

What if the earliest signs of cognitive decline aren’t just found in memory lapses, but in everyday behaviors like driving? 🚗

In this new blog, Dr. Ram Rao explores research showing that subtle changes in driving patterns, such as shorter trips, reduced route variability, and avoiding night driving, may signal early cognitive decline years before clinical symptoms appear.

These findings suggest that real-world, continuous data could serve as a powerful, non-invasive digital biomarker for identifying individuals at risk for mild cognitive impairment.
