The Driftless Area, also known as Bluff Country and the Paleozoic Plateau, is a region in the Midwestern United States that comprises southwestern Wisconsin, southeastern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa, and the extreme northwestern corner of Illinois. The Driftless Area is unique because it was bypassed by glaciers during the last ice age, leaving its landscape untouched and preserving a rugged topography with steep hills, river valleys, and exposed limestone. This resulted in a landscape with distinct features like spring fed cold water trout streams, caves, unique cold-producing ecosystem and slopes covered in talus, (broken rock), a unique microclimate that supports rare plants and animals found nowhere else in the region. It is a stark contrast to the rest of the Midwest, which was flattened and covered with glacial deposits (drift). The highlights of our visit to the Driftless Region was the drive along the Mississippi River. We traveled on the Wisconsin side then crossed the river to both Iowa and Minnesota sides to explore the unique views of the region in each state.
