ACE Presents … Breakfast of Champions

Please join us for the closing film of the fourth season of American Cinema Editors (ACE) Presents at Metrograph, Alan Rudolph’s Breakfast of Champions, with a Q&A to follow with the film’s editor, Suzy Elmiger, ACE, moderated by Meg Reticker, ACE.

Breakfast of Champions

7 pm
Metrograph, NYC

Breakfast of Champions is a 1999 satirical black comedy written and directed by Alan Rudolph, based on the novel by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. It stars Bruce Willis, Albert Finney, Nick Nolte, Barbara Hershey and Buck Henry. Willis plays the most respected businessman in Midland City, Indiana, a car salesman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Hoping to discover the meaning of life, he encounters Kilgore Trout (Finney), a failed science fiction writer who recurs in many of Vonnegut novels, at Midland’s annual Arts Festival.

Film critic Richard Brody of The New Yorker wrote: “Rudolph’s approach to the novel is audacious and his direction both utterly distinctive and appropriate to the freewheeling material of the book. Its star, Bruce Willis, financed the movie independently, liberating the director from any studio constraints. The film, a quarter of a century after its release, now seems like one of the most thrillingly original Hollywood products of its time, comprehensively different from just about anything else being released back then.”

Suzy Elmiger, ACE, has worked with some of the most respected directors of our time. She edited three films for Alan Rudolph, as well as three films for Stanley Tucci, including his debut Big Night and his follow-ups Imposters and Joe Gould's Secret.

Suzy co-edited Robert Altman's acclaimed film Short Cuts. She also collaborated with James Toback, for whom she cut Harvard Man and When Will I Be Loved; with director Dan Algrant on People I Know, and on David Duchovny's feature film debut House of D. She has also edited for the Emmy award-winning series' Master of None and Succession. Most recently, Suzy edited the Netflix drama All The Bright Places. Suzy is also a longtime advisor at the Sundance Director’s Lab and is a regular guest lecturer at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
