Recent research has revealed that ketamine’s antidepressant effects may primarily involve astroglia—supporting cells in the brain—rather than neurons, as previously thought. In studies using zebrafish, scientists observed that ketamine reduced “giving up” behaviors by overstimulating astroglia, which decreased their sensitivity to stress signals and increased persistence. Whole-brain imaging showed prolonged activation of astrocytes following ketamine administration, indicating a significant role for these cells in the drug’s effects.
These findings were further supported by similar results in mice, suggesting that targeting astroglia could be a promising avenue for developing new depression treatments. This challenges the traditional focus on neurons in antidepressant research and opens the door to exploring astroglia as key players in mood regulation. The study underscores the potential of astroglia as therapeutic targets, which may lead to more effective and safer antidepressant options in the future.
