It was a gorgeous day of celebrating printmaking, book arts, and the unique joy of ink, paper, metal and wood (type). And, of course, the steamroller-turned-printing-press did not fail to impress! ; )

Endless gratitude to Book Arts staff, board, teaching artists, members, and volunteers for making the day so special for all.

While we’re sad it’s over, we are INKING IT UP year-round at Book Arts so pop in for a class, exhibition, the next “fest”, and to support local artists in our treasure-chest of a shop anytime.

THE BOOKFEST STEAMROLLER HAS ARRIVED!

Tomorrow (Sat, June 6th) artist-designed blocks will get inked up for large-scale printing on the pavement, including this massive piece by artist Amanda Maciuba (who helped us source the steamroller)!

Here’s what Amanda has to say about this special block she made!

“I created my print using the CNC routers at Mount Holyoke College’s Fimbel Lab. The wonderful staff there took my 11” x 14” drawing and transformed it into an approximately 3 foot by 6 foot wood cut in under a week.

The routing itself took around 6.5 hours to complete! The image is a repeat pattern in four directions that shows abstracted natural patterns based on the water, beaches and marshes of Lake Erie. It features some invasive phragmites, zebra and quagga mussels.

In addition to the steamroller print I will be using WNYBAC’s letterpresses to create work about Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, the Niagara River and the surrounding watersheds.”

Amanda’s work Tide is also part of our 2026 Members Show - Good Impressions, which also opens during BookFest!

Many thanks to Amanda for connecting us with her family’s business, American Paving and Excavating, who generously donated the equipment so we can turn the machine into a printing press for the day! (Shoutout to her brother Mitch for organizing the equipment donation and her cousin Dirk for dropping this beast off downtown for us!)

A celebration of Book Arts and printmaking, BookFest is essentially Book Arts’ annual open house. We’ll have free print & artmaking demos all day that will be fun for all ages!

Get to know our 1930’s printing press, Olga, by pulling a letterpress poster!

Bring t-shirts, tote-bags and other cloth items from home to screenprint using artist-made designs! (Or buy one from us!)

Customize a bookmark on an antique typewriter using readymade paper - aka off-prints from artist projects in our studio!

Take part in a copperplate etching demo with artist !

Make your own sensory journal with our current Studio Gallery exhibition artist, Rachel Derrington!
