This is one tip that I believe most parents should live by.

When you tell your child they’re smart, it does a few things:

1. It does, like what Dr. Amen says, make them less likely to be able to deal with struggle. And when confronted with a struggle, it has a higher percentage chance of making them feel inferior, and to take it as an afront to their personality.
2. It makes them less likely to work hard. When you believe you’re smart because everyone has told you so, you feel like you don’t need to work as hard.

Conversely, when you tell your child they tried hard, they work hard, they can figure out, it:

1. Builds resilience, makes them more likely to overcome obstacles
2. Doesn’t bind their personality to intelligence, so that, while they may be intelligent, they aren’t hurt if something goes wrong, and
3. It teaches them the power of work ethic

The one caveat I’d add to this post is that you shouldn’t NEVER praise your children. But early on, focus on the right building blocks.

I fully believe you should praise your children in later years once the foundations are in place, and even as children.

Just don’t overdo it and build a false sense of superiority.

Be sure to share this post with someone who you think needs to see it!
