Every year I work with the students at Sweet Home Middle School for their 8th grade poetry slam I am transported. Back to having those hot, simmering ideas living at the top of my head, but no idea what to do with them. Back to writing things I knew weren’t good, but couldn’t stop myself from at least trying. Back to trying. It’s a good place to return to every so often. The beginning. And then to look at everything after from there. Congrats to the 67 students who tried trying.

Thanks to The Buffalo Hive & Lee Ames for talking about the intentionality behind Buffalo Speaks, the torch passing at Caffe Aroma, and where it all fits in to building lasting, community-driven literary arts programming.

Changes have been happening at Caffe Aroma's long-running poetry open mic, and there's a new poetry spotlight coming up at the Buffalo Iron Works. Lee Ames has the story.

Ya’ll, we’ve been working on this for months and I am so excited to finally share what’s going on!

BUFFALO SPEAKS this 716 Day At

Pile into Iron Works Thursday July 16th for a spoken word show unlike anything Buffalo has seen. Some of Buffalo’s most experienced poets and performers will be pulling out all the stops with feature performances that include projection, music, light, and sound.

For the first time, this curated veteran line up is presenting new individual work and collaborations to create a united show, rather than seven separate features.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow on the Iron Works website and will be on early bird pricing ($25) until June 1st!

Recently, I have felt closer to my city and its people than ever before. I think it’s a good thing. To feel part of a larger community. Like spokes on a bike rim. You can have a few strong connections, or a lot of small ones, but without any the wheel collapses.
