The Origins and History of R&B Music

-Since the late 1930s, African-Americans have dominated the performance of the blues-influenced genre of music known as "rhythm and blues" (abbreviated R&B). The term "Rhythm and Blues" was originally used in the American language in the late 1940s and was coined by Billboard magazine to be used in the marketing of musical genres.
Jerry Wexler, a reporter for Billboard magazine at the time (who would later go on to become a significant music producer), coined the word in 1949 to describe peppy popular music performed by African American singers that fused Blues and Jazz.

R. Kelly was born on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, and attended Kenwood Academy High School, where his music teacher-mentor Lena McLin inspired him to become a singer. He used to sing on street corners. He started off his career with a group by the name of Public Announcement.
