One Question, Two Photos: What distress call lets everyone know you have an emergency? Mayday! Mayday was adopted in 1927 to replace SOS in Morse code. It is still used as a universal distress call, especially in air traffic and shipping. What about 911? It was first used as an emergency phone number in 1968, but it did not become available in Buffalo Grove until 1981. AT&T picked 911 to be the emergency number because it had never been used as a telephone area code, so nobody could get it confused with anything else.
