“...on this particular day, I was stuck on a chord progression. I could hear it clearly in my mind, but my fingers wouldn’t cooperate. The more I forced it, the worse it got. Finally, I took a two-minute break. I just breathed, let go of the pressure, and said a simple, honest little prayer — this was before I really understood spiritual practice.

I just tried to release the frustration...I went back to the keyboard, hit record, and started the song. My fingers suddenly played exactly what I’d heard in my head.

Perfectly.

Effortlessly.

I was amazed.

Later I realized: that wasn’t just me getting creative or having a good day. That was me accessing the exact same state of divine consciousness I’ve been describing throughout this book... when I stopped trying to force it, when I let go and became present, when I opened myself through that brief moment of prayer and breath — I became a vessel.

The music wasn’t coming FROM me anymore. It was coming THROUGH me.

That’s divine consciousness. That’s what it feels like to access heaven while you’re still alive and working in a recording studio on a Tuesday afternoon...”
