Psalms 23:3 (NIV) - he refreshes my soul. He guides me | YouVersion 05/25/2026

Psalms 23:3 (NIV) - he refreshes my soul. He guides me | YouVersion he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

6 more tips to help your child follow instructions the first time ⬇️

❌ Instead of: “That’s not a toy”
✅ Try: “Put the blow dryer down.”
⭐ Skip the inferences. When we give indirect instructions, we make our children do the thinking for us. Our job is to make it easy for them to do the right thing.

❌ Instead of: “Be gentle with the baby”
✅ Try: “The baby loves when you pet her arm.”
⭐ Skip the vague reminders. What “gentle” means to us might be completely different from what “gentle” means to our child. Say exactly what you mean.

❌ Instead of: “If you want the ball, you have to ask.”
✅ Try: “If you want to use that, you can say, ‘May I use the ball?’”
⭐ Give them the exact words to say. When the right behavior works faster than the wrong one, it becomes the easy choice.

❌ Instead of: “Put your clothes in the hamper and take out your toothbrush”
✅ Try: “Put your clothes in the hamper.”
⭐ Avoid multi-step directions that overwhelm kids. When we keep instructions short, success comes quicker. Over time, we can increase complexity as their skills grow.

❌ Instead of: “Do you want to put your pajamas on?”
✅ Try: “Please put your pajamas on.”
⭐ Avoid turning directions into questions. If it’s not a choice, don’t ask like it is… give a clear, confident direction instead.

❌ Instead of silence when our kids follow directions,
✅ Try: “You remembered to put your clothes in the hamper without a reminder—that was really helpful.”
⭐ Skip the silence. Catch them doing it right. Following directions should earn far more of our attention than not following them.

Clear directions don’t just sound better… they work better.
