On Sunday morning, senior Pastor David Payne addressed his flock at Kerrville First United Methodist Church. “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” Paul, in his letter to the Romans, goes on to list the things that cannot separate us from the love of God: neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fear for today nor our worries about tomorrow, not even the powers of hell. “Not floodwaters, not loss of life, not catastrophic storms,” added Payne.

Communities like Kerrville often turn to their pastors for answers during trying times, but in the previous few days, as news of the flooding in Kerr County got worse and the death toll climbed, Payne struggled to find answers that satisfied his community. Folks kept calling him, asking what they could do to help. They didn’t want to accept his honest answer, which was to pray.
