Daylight Dies

Lost to the Living, our third full-length album, was released on this day 16 years ago! A few memories from that period:

While we were rehearsing the new material in our studio, the Raleigh police banged on our door and said “who wants to go the jail tonight?” They then issued citations to all of us which read “Did play musical instrument and emit noise in such a manner and duration as to be disturbing to the life and health of an individual.” One of our crowning achievements 💪🏻. A judge later dismissed it.

A very limited edition EP entitled “A Portrait in White” was released prior to the album so we’d have some new music to sell while touring with Candlemass. The full album was also later delayed due to printing issues. Even after the delay, only three European version of the CD was properly printed with glossy black on black imagery and reflective silver ink for type. The double vinyl, released years later, beautifully represents what we (and designer Travis Smith) intended.

After the albums release, we toured alongside Soilwork, Darkane and Swallow the Sun.

Barre recalls: “The chorus lead of A Portrait in White was inspired by the creepy breakdown riff from Blue Oyster Cult’s ‘Don't Fear the Reaper’. It came to me after watching a movie about a creative musician and his severe mental illness ‘The devil in Daniel Johnston’.”

Egan has recorded vocals for two songs on the new Fractal Gates album, out early this year (we heard rumors of sometime around April). We’ve been big fans of their past albums, and it sounds like the new music will be something special. Don’t miss it.

On an oppressively hot and humid August day 17 years ago, we met Ramon Boutv and his crew at an abandoned building outside of Charlotte NC. After several hours of performing, we traveled to a nearby quarry to film the night scenes. By the end of the day, most of our first ever video for the song Lies that Bind was complete. Grateful to Ramon and his crew for the sheer ambition and will power required to pull this off back then.
