A hundred tons of sand heated to 500°C stores six months of energy—enough to heat entire cities through Arctic winters using only summer sunlight. Finland's Polar Night Energy system just solved renewable energy's biggest problem: storage. And it costs less than lithium batteries while lasting 30+ years. 🏜️🔥

The sand battery works through simple physics: sand retains heat extraordinarily well. Solar and wind power generated during Finland's endless summer days heats industrial-grade sand using electrical resistance. The insulated sand stays at 500°C for months, releasing heat gradually through winter via heat exchangers that warm water for district heating systems. One installation provides heating and hot water for 10,000 homes without burning anything.

The cost advantage is staggering: lithium battery storage costs $300-500 per kilowatt-hour with 10-year lifespans. Sand batteries cost $10 per kilowatt-hour with 30+ year lifespans and zero degradation. Finland is already building 20 more facilities. Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are adopting the technology nationwide.

The US response? The energy industry is lobbying against sand battery subsidies, arguing they "compete unfairly with natural gas peaker plants"—the fossil fuel plants that activate during high demand. American cities continue building expensive lithium battery farms with short lifespans while Nordic countries use 97% renewable energy year-round with sand. The technology is ridiculously simple. The political barrier is entrenched interests.

When we wrote in a prior email that Governor Hochul is betraying the people of New York, we were speaking specifically about her recent approval of both the construction of the Trump-backed Williams-NESE fracked-gas pipeline under NY Harbor and the continued operation of a dirty fracked-gas plant to power a bitcoin mining facility on the shores of Seneca Lake; and by voluntarily agreeing to pause implementation of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

We also noted these “fun facts”: In 2024, Bill Hochul (the Governor’s husband) became counsel for the white-collar defense and investigations practice at the NY law firm Davis Polk. The firm’s clients include Trump Media – Truth Social’s parent company – and the Williams Companies, Inc., the developer of the NESE pipeline.

Well, now comes a report from LittleSis, NY RENEWS, and the Strong Economy for All Coalition, noting that fossil fuel companies such as National Fuel Gas, American Petroleum Institute, Consolidated Edison, and National Grid have increased their lobbying efforts by 52% since Governor Hochul came into office, pouring more than $15 million into lobbying state officials since 2021, and heavy polluters have increased lobbying spending by millions of dollars since Hochul signed the Climate & Community Protection Act into law.
