Brooklyn Museum info: Celebrate the creativity and voices of young New Yorkers through visual art and live performance, inspired by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and jazz musician Max Roach. Basquiat and Roach spent their lives pursuing justice through paint and sound. This Juneteenth weekend celebration draws inspiration from We Insist! (Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite) and Basquiat’s enduring artistic legacy.
Featuring work developed through The Basquiat Project and The Max Roach Music Project, the afternoon highlights how young people are carrying forward the legacies of these two Brooklyn legends through their own perspectives, expression, and creativity. Presented in the spirit of Drawing America: US@250, this program invites us to consider how questions of freedom, identity, justice, and belonging continue to resonate today.
