Nancy Whiskey Pub sits in that rare category where the neighborhood evolved around it, not the other way around.

Opened in 1967, before Tribeca was even coined, it started as a dockworker bar in a stretch of Lower Manhattan that looked very different than it does today. Inside, it still carries that same character.

You’ll still find the unique shuffleboard table, a jukebox, and those stained glass lamps frozen in time.

What part of this dive do you love?

Who remembers Volare, the longtime West Village Italian restaurant on West 4th Street, which operated for decades before closing its doors in 2021?

Being a neighborhood staple, Volare was known for its old school Italian American red sauce cooking with hearty portions of classics like pastas, veal, seafood dishes, and steakhouse-style mains.

After its New York City run ended, the restaurant’s legacy didn’t disappear entirely, as the operation later continued outside the city with a relocation to Tannersville, Pennsylvania in the Poconos, where Volare lives on in a new setting.

What old-school NYC restaurant do you still think about?

News just broke that Mr. Chow in Tribeca is expected to close after roughly two decades on the corner of Hudson and North Moore, with reports that Olio e PiĂą will soon take over the space.

The location first opened in 2006 as the second New York outpost from restaurateur Michael Chow, whose original London restaurant dates back to 1968. Over the years, the restaurant has become known for dishes like chicken satay, Beijing duck, Mr Chow noodles, and their nightly Handmade Noodle Show.

The space also drew crowds from the film, fashion, music, and art world for years. Did you ever get to visit the Tribeca location?

Earlier this year, da Toscano relocated from Minetta Lane (pictured above) in the West Village to the historic Iroquois Hotel in Midtown, reopening at 49 W 44th Street in February.

Chef-owner Michael Toscano originally opened the restaurant in 2020 before moving the operation into the hotel space. The move expanded their menu across breakfast, lunch, and dinner service, while keeping dishes like octopus carpaccio, lamb neck agnolotti, and veal chop parm on the menu.

The Midtown location also includes a larger dining room and kitchen, with leather banquettes, wood details, and more seating throughout the restaurant.

Did you ever go to the original spot before the Midtown move?
