Today is Juneteenth!

Despite the Emancipation Proclamation taking effect on January 1, 1863, Confederate control prevented full implementation in Confederate states. Even after the Confederacy surrendered in April 1865, slavery still existed in parts of the country, particularly in Texas.

On June 19, 1865, the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas and encountered people still held in slavery. That’s when a general order was issued by the Army to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free all remaining slaves in the state.

In December of 1865, chattel slavery was finally made illegal in the United States with the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

TWU Local 100 proudly recognizes Juneteenth as a day to recommit our union to the ongoing fight for equality in our workplace, and social justice in our communities.

TWU Local 100 joined faith, labor and elected leaders today at a Faith Leaders & Labor Leaders Roundtable on Autonomous Vehicles hosted by the Yemeni American Merchants Association in the Bronx.

As automation and AI continue to expand, President John V. Chiarello spoke about the need to protect workers and the jobs that keep New York moving.

“We don’t accept this as a people. We don’t accept what they’re putting out there. I’m here for the working people of New York.”

From buses and subways to every corner of the transportation industry, Local 100 is fighting to keep skilled workers on the job, protect good union careers, and make sure technology works for people, not the other way around.

The future of transportation must include transportation professionals — the ones with real intelligence, not Artificial Intelligence.
