As part of our 50th year, we’re reflecting on projects that shaped our history, including the Unitarian Universalist Area Church in Sherborn, Mass.

In 2010, Kaplan was selected for two phases of construction at the meetinghouse. The first focused on making the building fully accessible, along with upgrades to emergency lighting and exit signage. The second phase added a multi-purpose addition to support the church’s growing religious education programs and community activities.

Our team aligned the construction schedule with the congregation’s fundraising efforts and carefully phased the work to minimize disruption. This included creating a temporary entry and relocating the daycare playground during site improvements.

The project received the William D. Smith Memorial Award for the best Accessible Design from the Boston Society for Architecture and the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board.
