PRIDE Fest in BA

In February of 2022, a group of courageous teenagers from Broken Arrow Freshman Academy staged a walkout to raise awareness about bullying and to remember their friend that took their life due to intense bullying they faced. Adults in our community responded in a few different ways. The most ideal was to support these teens and help them amplify their voices and illuminate their message. The least ideal was a group of adults that spoke ill of the teen that took their life and blamed the kids crying out for help.

As the months went by, Broken Arrow became less of a welcoming community for LGBTQ humans and more of a haven for those that rail against the “lifestyle”. In March of 2022, a group of 5 women identifying as members of the LGBTQ community or allies gathered to plan Broken Arrow’s first ever Pride event. Out of all of that, the Advocate Alliance of Broken Arrow became a fully organized non profit entity in April of 2022. What started as a small group of like minded individuals had evolved into a community building group set on changing the narrative around the LGBTQ community.

While we are open and seek to serve all individuals that need support, we focus on LGBTQ equality and safety above all else. The first phase of our organization was hosting Pride Fest in BA and growing our community presence. We have set a goal for 2023 of renting office space to host youth groups, a place for meetings, and a hub of allied resources for the Broken Arrow area. We hope that we can educate the public in order to create more LGBTQ allies, provide a stronger community, and easier access to resources for those in Broken Arrow and the surrounding communities.
