“Throw her on the track for some quarters and she’ll burn your doors off”, says Kelli’s longtime coach Dave Ames. “What she possesses in speed or on the track, a few years ago it couldn’t match up to the roads. She would struggle to run 10k or up, simply because that heart needed to get even stronger to go longer”.

Short, a former D1 standout 800m runner at LaSalle College (PA) made a transition about a 2 years ago to focus on longer distances (while still never losing the speed) and working on getting her half marathon times down. All knowing a bigger engine leads to bigger performances. Now at 36 and a mom of 2, registered dietician and CPT, timing and discipline become even more important. She balances this like a champ.

Short has improved her threshold window by 30 seconds faster. Meaning a tempo day much more power is being output through development. She now races a half mary at the same pace a 5k was some years ago, and has shaved over 6 mins off her half marathon PR. And while she’s never run a marathon or even wants to think about one (she’ll fight Dave on this forever) — she finds herself only a few mins off the OTQ Women’s marathon standard.

Development doesn’t happen overnight. If done right, it’s a slow and sometimes boring process. But that boring process leads to development like this. “Wake up each day and win it”, says Coach Dave. “That Kel does daily”.
