After the death of someone we love, surviving is often all we can manage. We simply make it through the next minute, hour, the next day, the next breath. And that’s okay. I remember wholeheartedly feeling and believing I would never be happy again after Richard died.
But there comes a time when we begin to ask ourselves if we’re merely existing or truly living. Sometimes we see glimpse of change and it can catch us off guard to laugh or maybe intentionally plan something fun.
Choosing to live again doesn’t mean leaving your loved one behind or loving them any less. It means learning to carry their memory while allowing yourself permission to experience joy, laughter, purpose, and hope again.
Deep in our hearts, many of us know our loved one would want this for us, just as we would want it for them if our roles were reversed.
Getting to that place isn’t easy. It takes years. It takes patience. It takes courage. It takes hard work. There will be setbacks, and there will be days when surviving is enough.
But don’t give up.
You deserve more than simply existing. You deserve to live a life that honors both your love and your loss. And when you’re ready, know that healing isn’t about moving on, it’s about learning to move forward while carrying your loved one with you, always.
💚 Don’t stop surviving. But don’t stop believing that one day, you’ll begin living again, too.

❤️ Today, on National Bereaved Parents Day, we are holding space for every parent carrying the profound grief of losing a child.
No matter how much time has passed, your child is loved, remembered, and forever a part of your story.
We would be honored if you would share your child’s name and, if you’re comfortable, a favorite photo or memory in the comments. Together, we can speak their names, celebrate their lives, and remind one another that they are never forgotten. ❤️🩹
Today, we remember your child. Today, we remember your love. 💚

Grief changes the timeline of our lives.
There is the life we lived before the phone call, the diagnosis, the accident, the goodbye.
And then there is everything that comes after.
The “after” doesn’t completely erase who you were before your loss. It simply asks you to learn how to carry something you never wanted to carry. A part of the old you will emerge with time.
At the Richard Lambert Foundation, we don’t believe healing means going back to who you were before. That version of you no longer exists, and that’s okay. Healing is learning to build a meaningful life that honors the person you love while making room for hope, joy, and purpose again.
There will always be a before and an after.
But the “after” can still hold love. It can still hold laughter. And, in time, it can hold moments of peace.
❤️🩹 If grief has changed your “before” and “after,” know that you don’t have to navigate the journey alone.
