Nineteen-year-old Dominic and his family fled the conflict in South Sudan and now live in Kenya, at one of its largest refugee camps.

Food is hard to come by. They get rations from the UN, but they have to walk three hours to the center of the camp each month to collect it. The whole family goes, and they divide the food up into easier portions for everyone to carry.

“Living in the camp is hard. We are always so worried about food that we can’t think about anything else. Even if those other things are also important,” Dominic says.

One thing that’s very important to Dominic is his schooling.

“Sometimes we have to sell the food so we have money to pay for our school fees and supplies,” Dominic says. That can make him feel guilty, as he knows his family desperately needs food.

He shares how difficult it is to try and concentrate on classes when his stomach is growling:

“I don’t even hear what the professor is saying many times. I take notes and then revise them at home after I’ve eaten. That’s when the information sticks. My hope is to finish school so I can help my siblings. Without that, there is no hope for the future.”
