It was an honor for members of our team to attend the Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony in Bridgeport earlier today.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. Today, it is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring contributions of Black Americans.
While Juneteenth became a federal and state holiday only recently, Bridgeport has celebrated this day for decades. The annual Juneteenth of Fairfield Co Parade and Harambee Festival will mark its 34th year on June 13 at Seaside Park, making it one of Connecticut’s longest-running Juneteenth celebrations. We are especially proud that our Senior Director of Behavioral Health Services, Tia Reid, will serve as a Parade Marshal.
We are grateful to join neighbors, community partners, and local leaders in honoring this occasion and celebrating the history, culture, leadership, and contributions of Black communities. We hope to see many of you next week at the Juneteenth Parade and Harambee Festival!
