The recent earthquake in Turkey was utterly devastating. The loss of life and property continues to climb daily. They can surely use all of the help and prayers that we can send.

The initial shaking lasted over one full minute. Only 12% of California homeowners have earthquake insurance.

The other day I was social distancing at Costco with the hundreds of my other BFF's. And on the way out, I stopped by their floral display. I picked up a flower arrangement for my wife and looked at it. Just then, a lady's voice came from my right side.

She said, "I can make that better for you." She then took the arrangement to the walk-in refrigerator, removed some of the flowers replacing them with newer, more colorful flowers and handed it back to me.

WOW! And of all places. Somebody who went the extra mile - all on her own.

I only hope I can exemplify that moment - daily!

I would like to have all insureds believe that the underwriting techniques used by all underwriters are as high-tech and sophisticated as those used by SpaceX, but I am sad to confess they actually use Google more than rocket science.

One of our workers' comp. clients had a great idea: If an insured went year after year WITHOUT having any workers' comp. claims, the carrier should apply a credit for each renewal premium. Then, at a certain point in the future, the earned credits would actually wipe out the premium and the carrier would have to send a check to the insured. 😲

Part Two: A while ago, an underwriter called me to decline writing an insured because the phone book add said "custom-made fireplace screens"; he said we can't write this retailer, because they are manufacturing. In truth, the retailer did the measurements and sent those to the manufacturer. Recently, another underwriter used the internet to reseach and subsequently decline to write another retailer.
