New Haven’s Institute Library is a hidden gem with a rich history. Founded as the Young Man’s Institute in 1826, it’s CT’s oldest and the last remaining independent circulating libraries in North America.
“In the conservative city of 19th century New Haven, the library served as a rare sanctuary for advocates of women’s suffrage and the abolition of slavery. It offered classes, debates, and a popular lecture series that attracted such leading American social thinkers as Henry Ward Beecher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Anna E Dickinson, and Frederick Douglass.”
This week’s video work explored the speech, What, to the American Slave, is your 4th of July? by Frederick Douglass. Sunday’s New Haven Register is supposed to feature spread on Douglass.
