Oh the Psoas, a much talked about but often misunderstood muscle. Its is one of the most important muscles in the body. Not only is it the deepest muscle in the body, and the only muscle to attach us from top to bottom and from to back, but it also spans more joints than any other muscle in the body. The function of the psoas muscle is to connect the upper body to the lower body. Combined with the iliopsoas muscle, the psoas is a major contributor of flexion of the hip joint. But let’s talk about the action of the psoas that most people miss when stretching. The rotation. Because the iliopsoas ( where psoas major and iliacus connect) muscle attaches to the less trochanter of the femur, it has the ability to externally rotate the femur with hip flexion. Yet, most people don’t apply rotation in their psoas stretch. In order to get the most efficient stretch out of the muscle, you must apply both extension and rotation.
