EXTREME HEAT WARNING FOR ILLINOIS & THE MIDWEST
While states like Arizona are accustomed to triple-digit temperatures, much of Illinois and the Midwest are not. When temperatures climb toward 100°F, heat-related emergencies can develop quickly—even in just a few minutes.
NEVER LEAVE CHILDREN OR PETS IN A PARKED VEHICLE.
Even with the windows cracked open, the temperature inside a vehicle can soar to 120–140°F or higher within minutes. A child's body heats up 3 to 5 times faster than an adult's, making even a short stop extremely dangerous.
If you see a child or pet left alone in a hot vehicle:
• Call 911 immediately if they appear to be in distress.
• Stay nearby until help arrives.
• Know your state's Good Samaritan laws regarding emergency rescue.
CHECK ON THOSE WHO MAY NEED HELP
Please take a few minutes today to check on:
• Elderly family members and neighbors
• People with chronic medical conditions
• Those without air conditioning
• Individuals living alone
• Young children
If you don't have air conditioning, contact your local emergency management office, public health department, library, or community center to locate a cooling center or public shelter in your area.
SIGNS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION
• Heavy sweating
• Cool, pale, clammy skin
• Muscle cramps
• Weakness or fatigue
• Dizziness or fainting
• Headache
• Nausea or vomiting
• Fast, weak pulse
What to Do:
• Move the person to a cool place.
• Loosen or remove excess clothing.
• Apply cool, wet towels or take a cool shower.
• Sip cool water or a sports drink if the person is alert.
• Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen, last longer than an hour, or the person cannot keep fluids down.
SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE (MEDICAL EMERGENCY)
• Body temperature of 103°F or higher
• Hot, red, dry skin (or profuse sweating may still be present)
• Confusion or unusual behavior
• Slurred speech
• Seizures
• Loss of consciousness
• Rapid, strong pulse
What to Do Immediately
• Call 911 without delay.
• Move the person into shade or air conditioning.
• Remove excess clothing.
• Cool them rapidly using cool water, wet towels, ice packs on the neck, armpits, and groin, or fan them while applying water.
• Do NOT force them to drink if they are confused, unconscious, or unable to swallow safely.
Heat Safety Tips
✔ Drink water regularly—even if you aren't thirsty.
✔ Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine.
✔ Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
✔ Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (typically 10 AM–4 PM).
✔ Never leave pets outside without shade and plenty of fresh water.
✔ Walk dogs during the early morning or evening, and test pavement with your hand—if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.
A simple phone call or a quick visit to a neighbor could save a life today.
Please share this post and help keep our communities safe during this dangerous heat wave.
Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Look out for one another.
