How many times a day do you “should” yourself?
Society has taught us that we “should” make x amount of money, we “should” be a certain weight or size, or we “should” be at a certain point in our lives at x age.
•
What happens if you stop “shoulding” yourself and start asking what you really want? Do you think that you won’t be as productive or as successful? I highly doubt it. When we “should” ourselves we lose who we want to be and work towards someone we think we should be. Next time you find yourself “shoulding” yourself, ask if it is something that you really want to be doing or if it something that you think you should be doing.
•
During my eating disorder journey (and today), I found this to be extremely helpful around food. By taking away the “should”, I was able to give my body and mind what it wanted. What a glorious feeling to have the freedom to satisfy your wants and needs, rather than following some silly fad diet that is filled with “should” foods. Some days my body and mind wants ice cream, and sometimes it wants fruits and veggies. That is the amazing part … there are no rules when you actually listen to yourself.
•
Try to take some time this weekend to notice how many times you say “I should.” I challenge you to change that into “what do I want”? 🤍
