Wow! What a storm! Lots of moisture we would have preferred during ski season… but hey… we’l take it!

Here are some tips and reminders about how you can minimize tree damage during and after a heavy, wet snow…

Removing heavy, wet spring snow from trees is crucial to prevent broken branches and structural damage, especially when trees have already begun to leaf out.

Gently sweep and tap branches with an upward motion using a broom to avoid adding downward pressure that can cause snaps.

Work Bottom-Up: Start by clearing lower branches first. This prevents them from breaking under the weight of snow that falls from higher branches when you clear them.

Gently Shake Limbs: If branches are not completely frozen or covered in thick ice, gently shaking them can effectively remove snow.

Avoid Over-Freezing Issues: If branches are coated in ice, avoid shaking them, as this can cause brittle wood to snap or strip bark.

Safety First: Do not attempt to remove snow from trees near power lines. Do not use a ladder to reach higher limbs.

Focus on Young Trees: Prioritize removing snow from small, young, or multi-stemmed trees (e.g., junipers, arborvitae) which are more susceptible to bending and breakage.

For broken branches, prune them promptly to prevent decay, pests, or disease from entering the wound.

Enjoy your snow day!! ☃️

A priceless moment visiting a nursery with our client, Peter, 15 years ago. 🌿

At that time, Tom, our company founder, was working directly with Peter and his wife to design the landscape for their dream retirement home in the foothills above Boulder. When Peter asked to go on a field trip to find his "perfect" tree, Tom didn't hesitate to oblige.

Peter’s expression says it all. Mission accomplished—he found the one.

While Peter is no longer with us, his trees and the shared memories created during that project certainly live on. Shared moments like these with our clients are truly priceless.

As the proverb says, the best time to plant is always today.

Happy Arbor Day!
