Shipping moves more than 80% of global trade, and currently accounts for roughly 3% of global emissions. Green shipping corridors aim to change that.

By focusing on specific maritime routes, these corridors bring together ports, ship operators, and fuel suppliers to run ships on low- or zero-emission fuels. Concentrating effort in one place helps align investment and prove that clean shipping can work at scale.

Last year, RMI and the Global Maritime Forum ran a pre-feasibility study which found that Brazil, where Port of Açu is located, could play a central role in this transition. With a largely renewable grid, strong support for clean hydrogen, and access to key resources, the country is well positioned to produce cost-competitive e-fuels.

Now, we’ve formed a consortium and task force to advance an e-fuel export corridor linking the Port of Açu in Brazil with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium. Alongside the port teams, we welcome HIF Global, Fuella, and NYK Line to the corridor consortium and Höegh Autoliners and Wallenius Wilhelmsen to the task force.

The next phase will assess infrastructure, vessels, and business models to create a roadmap for exporting e-fuels and for using those fuels to power the ships themselves.
