Hyperpigmentation is caused by both internal and external factors. For example internal causes can be genetic such as birthmarks, albinism, melasma, and vitiligo. Whereas post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is caused by an injury or inflammation to the skin which increases pigment production. An increase in the production of melanin (pigment) is the body’s natural response to protect healthy skin cells. Sun spots or a sun tan fall under external factors.
