Resilience. Rising. Love. These themes ran through a powerful SuperiHER conference last week and safety and resilience advocate Kate Gladdin brought it home with a powerful lesson with her Create the Good campaign.
After losing her sister and mother within a few years' time, both to being hit by a car, Kate began learning about why these accidents occurred and launched a foundation to advocate for safety in their memory. She left the corporate path she was on, and created something good from her grief.
She shared a tangible metaphor with us. She instructed us to tear up sheets of paper, as though we had been torn. She also guided us through realizing we wouldn't be the same because the paper pieces will not fit the same. In doing this, Kate walked us through the idea of creating something new with the pieces that were left.
A powerful realization, and as someone who has traveled into the depths of grief with her kids after my first husband and business partner became sick and died, put into a very simple metaphor.
I kind of think I've done that, but never thought of it this way so logically. It was always, we can be stronger after the cracks and we fill them up and make them stronger, like when bones heal. But the reality is we are still never the same no matter how much glue. It stays with us. And we somehow still judge ourselves by that original standard of what we thought we are supposed to be. But what we create out of that is up to us and we let go of those self judgments in order to do that.
This was a beautifully simple way to explain what resilience looks like - and just like how everyone's paper tears and reconstruction were different, the way grief and resilience looks and feels and is created will be different for everyone else.
Whether experiencing life loss or a loss in business or professional life, taking stock of what remains and creating something beautiful and purposeful from where you are in that moment is powerful. Bloom, a different flower, in your own space and time.
Check out podcast and books and get ready, Australia, she is home next month to deliver a TedX talk.
Wishing you a sweet and peaceful Passover.

Most of my work, working on behalf of candidates and law firms, is referral based, and there is a reason for that.
Taking the time to understand and work with a candidate and a law firm practice group means gives me the advantage of identifying what combinations of attorneys and practice groups and firms will match well and thrive, not just for today's interview or for the year, but for the long haul as a building block or stepping stone for future firm and career growth where everyone wins.
That means repeat business from law firms for searches. It also means repeat business from attorneys I placed as associates who are now partners and hiring themselves for a group. It also means repeat business when attorneys I've placed need to move geographically and need assistance. It means referrals to other lawyers. And it also means referrals from within law firms when one of their own is moving and they don't have offices in a location.
No amount of tape can patch where a match doesn't exist. It's just not human.
Inrerviews booked, Candidate Interview Prep Calls scheduled, Meetings with and Researching the Firms candidates will be meeting with in order to prepare them for interviews. Full week ahead and tulips on my desk!
The legal job market is moving so fast right now, it hasn't moved this way since just after the pandemic! The hottest practice areas include commercial litigation, labor & employment, real estate, environmental and corporate. This is true of most major US job markets.
If you are an attorney contemplating a lateral move, please reach out!
Brava, Renee, Stef, Joey and Jeanie for all your hard work putting this day together and thank uou to all the amazing folks who made this day possible.
A lot of work and planning goes into this event and yet I can't wait for the next one already. Till then, wonderful lessons learned today about resilience in our business and personal lives and turning challenges into purpose and passions - even if we don't get to see the final fruits of our work ourselves. Transformative leadership changes lives and is a legacy we can pass forward.
Thank you, , for creating and leading the way with this event!
