Occasionally, there's just a super special client for whom there are no words adequate to explain how honored I feel to be at their birth. Eight years ago (!) we welcomed a new nanny to our family to care (mostly) for our kids. She was a beloved part of our family for over four years, and has continued to be a presence in Lily's life. She's loved my family through times of great joy and times of real struggle. She *knows* us, and loves us in spite of ourselves.
In February we had brunch together and she gave me a beautiful that I'd been coveting with a darling note inside that said "Be our doula?" Baby Atticus was on his way at the end of September!
And oh what fun we had enjoying pregnancy together! She took my childbirth class, we texted all the time, and loved on that growing belly.
And then one night, more than eight weeks too soon, I got a text that she was in labor. And we had to transfer from the community hospital she'd so carefully chosen to the bigger hospital with a higher level NICU.
And it was a labor like none I've ever been to. Our dear Kayla was so strong, and so brave, and so incredibly in control. And then she looked at me with big eyes and said "Something's different. I'm scared." And a few short moments later, this tiny little human joined the world, crying and wailing with beautiful color and strong tone. And he spent a brief moment on his mama's belly and then went off to the NICU with his dad.
This week, 40 days after his incredible, spectacular entrance to the world, I got to go snuggle Baby Atticus, and give my beautiful friend a hug and a few tears.
I truly, truly have the most incredible job.
