Ellenzweig

When Yale University decided to relocate its neuroscience and psychology disciplines into new facilities at 100 College Street, the University enlisted Ellenzweig to unify various departments that had been scattered across its campus into a single, cohesive environment conducive to interdisciplinary collaboration. Our mission was to enhance both physical and intellectual connections. The result was the renovation of over 140,000 square feet of existing office space into cutting-edge research labs, offices, and collaboration spaces. In partnership with Vanderweil Engineers, we designed interconnected labs that are efficient, flexible, and adhere to the highest sustainability standards. The building now accommodates departments from the School of Medicine along with the Wu Tsai Institute, a University initiative established in 2021 to further research into human cognition. With the recent dedication of 100 College Street, Yale has further strengthened its position as a leader in the bioscience sector.

To mark Day this year, we invited six vendors to the office to showcase their new and innovative earth-friendly architectural products. During this mini in-house trade show, we all had the opportunity to speak with reps from each of these companies to learn about their products, which ranged from interior wood surfaces made from recycled chopsticks and lighting fixtures using all natural materials to eco-friendly flooring, ceiling panels, paints, stains, and exterior glass.
Thank you to Kathleen Barron from Building & Design Resources for organizing the event and the six vendors who participated:

We are delighted to announce that Neil Cahalane, AIA, FRIAI, has been appointed President of Ellenzweig. With more than 30 years of service to the firm as a principal and design and management leader, Neil has completed some of our largest and most complex science and engineering projects for colleges and universities. He will assume this new role beginning January 1, 2024.
“I am excited to take on this new leadership role in the firm as we collectively continue on our course for the future, one that builds on our success as design innovators, thoughtful and committed collaborators, and passionate stewards of the planet,” said Neil Cahalane. “It is a future I look forward to sharing with our clients, my colleagues, and our industry partners.”
Neil succeeds Michael Lauber, FAIA, who served as President for 15 years and will remain a principal with the firm, continuing his project work. During Michael’s tenure, the firm built on its long history of design excellence and innovation in academic science and engineering facilities while significantly expanding its expertise in the areas of engineering, marine science, and health sciences for colleges and universities, as well as commercial life sciences facilities.
“Known for developing and managing relationships, Neil is an astute consensus builder,” said Michael Lauber. “Neil’s design acumen and strengths as an effective, diplomatic communicator promise a strong future for the firm.”
Congratulations Neil!

Nearing completion, our conversion of an office building into lab facilities for 300 biomedical researchers is connected to a new addition for a cGMP manufacturing facility by a daylit atrium. The variegated copper-colored fins animate the façade of the addition as well as serve to visually unify the two components.
