The Massachusetts Resiliency Center sent out the following information: "Tips for Survivors of the Boston Marathon Bombing".
(NOTE: Thanks to Melida Arredondo for sharing!)
Coping with July 4th Triggers:
It is important to know that as a survivor of a traumatic event like the Marathon Bombings, there may be images, smells and sounds that can 'trigger' memories and feelings of the event. Even just anticipating experiencing something like the July 4th festivities, hearing the sound of fireworks and smelling the burnt fireworks, might create distressing reactions that are as strong as they were at the time of the bombings.*
In addition, post trial memories and experiences may also be fresh on one's mind. Fear, frustration and anger, as examples, are not unusual responses when you are reminded of your losses-physical, emotional and spiritual.
*Smells tend to be some of our strongest memories and they last the longest.
How to Cope:
First, understand that you may have some strong distressing reactions even many months later especially when trigger events occurBe patient and kind with yourself; accept that this is part of the recovery process and will take time; rebuilding occurs on many levelsTry coping skills like arranging to be with supportive family and friends; engage in stress management like deep, slow breathing; gentle stretching and giving yourself positive messages to help stay calm. Support and self-calming techniques can help you emerge stronger than before and perhaps participate in events you once enjoyed.
