Honoring Charlie Parker on His Birthday 🥀

Charles Christopher Parker Jr. was born on August 29, 1920, in Kansas City, Kansas. He became one of the most influential American jazz alto saxophonists, bandleaders, and composers. Parker passed away on March 12, 1955, in New York City.

During his career from the late 1930s through the mid-1950s, Parker was central to the development of bebop, a style of jazz known for fast tempos, advanced harmonies, and improvisation. He recorded for Savoy, Dial, Verve, and Mercury. His work included important compositions such as “Ornithology,” “Confirmation,” “Billie’s Bounce,” “Now’s the Time,” “Koko,” “Donna Lee,” and “Parker’s Mood.” He worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Earl Hines, and Jay McShann, among others, and also appeared in the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts.

Parker introduced new approaches to harmony, rhythm, and phrasing that influenced modern jazz and remain part of its foundation. His recordings and ideas continue to be studied and performed by musicians across the world.

Charlie Parker’s influence continues to be present in the music world.
