— So We Tried It!!! Last summer, social media users decided that their warm-weather beverage of choice would be an unusual yet simple combination: crisp glasses of Sauvignon Blanc with slices of frozen jalapeño floating inside. Although it isn’t a trend we’d strongly recommend, this two-ingredient combo made sense. Sauvignon Blancs tend to have aromas of green pepper, so it isn’t surprising that people would associate them with jalapeños.
This year’s Sauvignon Blanc-centric fad is somehow even more surprising. According to the latest influx of videos on TikTok and Instagram, consumers are adding frozen pickles to the crisp white wine this summer. They’re even taking it a step further by adding ice and a splash of pickle brine, creating what’s effectively a two-ingredient white wine cocktail.
How to try the Sauvignon Blanc and pickle trend
If this trend is calling to you, it’s easy to try at home. You just need a bottle of chilled Sauvignon Blanc and a jar of whole dill pickles. (They have to be dill pickles, ultra-sour and salty. If you wouldn’t do a pickleback shot with the brine, don’t use it for this.)
Take a few pickles out of the jar and freeze them in a Ziploc bag or Tupperware. Once they’re frozen solid, carefully slice the pickles into coins with a serrated knife. You want the slices to be a little on the thick side. The most basic version of the pickles and Sauvignon Blanc trend calls for just those two ingredients: add the sliced pickles to a glass, pour the wine over them, swirl, and enjoy.
However, if you really want to amp up the pickle flavor and turn this into something closer to a cocktail, you can take two more simple steps. Add the sliced pickles and a handful of ice to your wine glass. Pour in your Sauvignon Blanc, then top it off with a splash of pickle brine and stir to combine. Whether you end up liking it or not, your pickle wine is now ready to enjoy.
