The Whipping Man

Matthew Lopez's atmospheric think piece takes place on the night of Passover in 1865—just a few days after the end of the Civil War. With a bullet in his leg, a Jewish ex-Confederate soldier is taken in and cared for by two of his former slaves.

New Repertory Theatre

The three-decade old company takes pride in staging thought-provoking works, including afterlife: a ghost story and Opus, which help guide audiences toward the true meaning of loss and friendship. This approach, as well as its penchant for staging new works from New England–area playwrights, has earned the company 21 Elliot Norton Awards and 40 IRNE Awards. But its contributions don't stop there. In addition to performances at its home base, Arsenal Center for the Arts, the New Rep frequently transports the magic of the theatre to underserved schools for free or pro-rated productions.

The Scouting Report

During two of their final three home games of the regular season, the Terriers will defend Agganis Arena against two Patriot League foes: Lafayette and American University. Though it's their first season as a member of the conference, the Terriers have already established themselves as a top contender. Sophomore guard Maurice Watson, Jr. has played a major role in that success. He averages a team-best 15 points and seven assists per game, meaning he fits the mold as the go-to player during tight match-ups and napkin-distributor during team pizza parties.

Boston University Terriers

On December 16, 1916, Boston University dove into varsity-level competition when its men's basketball team took on the Posse School of Gymnastics. Other sports joined the ranks in the coming decades including football, track, soccer, and ice hockey–which eventually captured the university's first national championship in 1971. The hockey team has since added four additional titles, most recently in 2009.

But the early 1970s also saw women's sports arrive on campus, led by the women's crew team. During its inaugural season in 1974, that squad out rowed competitors and avoided the giant tie-dyed lily pads that plagued American waters at the time en route to a World Championships appearance. For all its success in fields of play over the years—and before moving to the Patriot League in 2013—BU was a perennial winner of the America East Commissioner's Cup: an award that recognizes the conference's strongest athletic program.
