Meet our first Poet-in-Residence: Lokosh (Joshua D. Hinson) citizen of the Chickasaw Nation.

A painter, a poet, and a fluent speaker of the Chickasaw language, Lokosh writes and makes art on the Chickasaw Nation in Ada, Oklahoma — and an activist for the revitalization of his language.

His Chickasaw name means “gourd.”

He signs his work Nannikbi’ (Maker) and Holissochi’ (Poet).

When we first approached Lokosh to contribute lyrics for one or two songs in Sing Out Strong: Revolutionary Voices, he sent us a portfolio of his poems and invited us to choose.

It was impossible to pick just two.

Lokosh is now the voice behind ten of the eleven songs in this song cycle — language, memory, survival, set to new music.

Hear his words live this Thursday, June 4 · 1:00 PM at the with a live talkback from Lokosh to follow.
